The peaceful atmosphere of the Strand beachfront has been somewhat dampened this week by a very vocal protest from a local resident who has officially declared a total boycott of every establishment along Beach Road. The reason for this dramatic stand is a series of confrontations regarding his four legged companion and a stubborn refusal by local owners to embrace what the man calls international standards of hospitality.
The row reportedly began on Saturday afternoon when the resident attempted to enjoy a coffee at a popular terrace overlooking the ocean. He was accompanied by his dog but before he could even look at a menu he was informed by a nervous (scared) waiter that pets were strictly forbidden inside the dining area. What followed was a debate that could be heard all the way to the Pavilion.
According to the resident the Helderberg is living in the dark ages when it comes to animal integration. “It is an absolute circus” he told us during a rather heated interview on the pavement. “My dog should be welcome everywhere. He sits under the table and is just showcaining his pawsernality… Why must I leave my friend at home just because I want a slice of cake?”
The restaurant manager however had a different story to tell. “The problem is not just the dog being there” he explained while wiping down a table. “The animal was being extremely unruly and was actually jumping up and humping the legs of other customers while they were trying to eat their lunch. It is unhygienic and frankly quite embarrassing for the other guests.”
When confronted with these claims the resident remained completely unphased. He argued that such behaviour is entirely natural and that people are being far too sensitive. “It is nature” he insisted while adjusting the leash. “If people cannot handle a bit of natural animal behaviour then they should stay in their houses. I will not spend one cent in a place that does not respect the instincts of a dog. I will cook my own food until this town catches up with the rest of the civilised world.”
