TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN THE HELDERBERG THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK

Let’s be honest, between the price of petrol and the cost of a decent loaf of bread, having a “day out” in the Helderberg is starting to feel like a luxury reserved for the people who live in the houses with the big gates.

But if you’re looking to kill a Saturday without checking your banking app every five minutes, there are still a few spots where your Rands actually go the distance. We’ve rounded up the best ways to keep busy in Somerset West, Strand, and Gordon’s Bay—perfect for a TikTok background and easy on the wallet.

1. THE “PENSIONER PACE” AT HELDERBERG NATURE RESERVE
For just R30, you can pretend you’re a serious hiker at the Helderberg Nature Reserve. It has those fancy wooden boardwalks now, so you don’t even have to get your sneakers dirty if you don’t want to. It’s the best place in town to take a photo of a protea and act like you’re “one with nature” before heading back to the car for the aircon.

2. WINDOW SHOPPING AT VERGELEGEN (FOR R20)
The entry fee to Vergelegen Wine Estate is basically the price of a loose cigarette these days. For R20, you can walk around the gardens and look at the trees that have been there since before your Oupa was born. You don’t even have to buy the wine; just walk around with your sunglasses on and look mysterious. People might even mistake you for someone famous (we know how that goes).

3. THE STRAND ‘PIPE’ STROLL
It’s free. It’s long. It’s windy. Walking “The Pipe” in Strand is the ultimate Helderberg activity for when you have exactly zero Rands. You get to see the surfers, the dogs, and the people trying to jog while looking like they’re having a mid-life crisis. Just hold onto your hat.

4. SECOND-HAND VIBES AT BIKINI BEACH BOOKS
Located in Gordon’s Bay, this place is basically a maze made of paper. You can spend an hour in here “browsing” (which is code for standing in the shade) and you might actually find a book for the price of a taxi fare. Plus, it looks great on your Instagram Stories.

5. DUCK WATCHING AT PAARDEVLEI
The vlei near Somerset Mall is actually a top-tier spot for a “discreet” walk. You can watch the flamingos and the ducks for free. It’s very quiet, which is perfect if you’re trying to avoid that person you owe money to at the Mall.

Note to self: Do not try to fuck the duck!

6. BRAAI WITH A VIEW AT KLIPPIES BAY
If you’ve got a bag of charcoal and some sausages, Klippies Bay (on the way to Rooi-Els) is a classic. The view is 5-star, but the price is 0-star. Just watch out for the baboons—they aren’t interested in your Instagram handle, they just want your lunch.

7. STRAWBERRY PICKING (OR JUST LOOKING) AT HELDERBERG FARM
During the season, you can go to the farm and pick your own strawberries. Or, you can just do the “viewpoint” hike. It’s a bit of a climb, but the view of the whole basin makes you feel like you own the place, even if you’ve only got R50 in your pocket.

8. ICE CREAM ON THE STRAND PROMENADE
Grab a cone from one of the legendary shops on Beach Road and walk the promenade. It’s the best “people-watching” spot in the Western Cape. You’ll see everything from fancy sports cars to people trying to fly kites in a South-Easter.

9. THE DANIE MILLER TRAIL
This trail above Gordon’s Bay gives you the best view of the “GB” sign on the mountain. It’s free and relatively easy, as long as you don’t try to do it in flip-flops. It’s the perfect spot to take a “Golden Hour” selfie to show everyone you’re living your best life.

10. HARBOUR WATCHING IN GORDON’S BAY
Walking along the harbour wall is a Helderberg staple. You can watch the rich people on their yachts and pretend you’re deciding which one to buy. Cost: Zero. Satisfaction: High.
