SOMERSET WEST – A local cashier at a popular Somerset West shopping centre caused a bit of a stir on Thursday afternoon after suggesting that global superstar Celine Dion was at the till.
The Power of Love singer was reportedly spotted in the queue, with the rumour spreading through the aisles faster than a “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” special on salted butter. Shoppers were seen slowing down their trolleys and lingering near the service counters, apparently convinced that the Canadian legend was in town to pick up a few essentials.
The confusion reportedly started when a famous name appeared on a debit card in a routine payment for some toiletries and a bag of charcoal.
A TALE OF TWO DIONS
However, the excitement was short-lived. It turns out the woman in the oversized sunglasses was not the multi-Grammy winner currently residing in Las Vegas. Instead, those who lingered a bit too long were left puzzled to find that the individual was actually Seline Deon, a fledgling singer from the Northern Cape who was simply in the Helderberg for a bit of holidaymaking. The “other” Celine did not look particularly amused by the sudden attention. She was seen loading her boot while several curious onlookers tried to “discreetly” take photos or record a TikTok of her putting the groceries away, seemingly hoping she might notice their Instagram handles or give them a follow-back.
THE ILLUSION SHATTERS
From a distance, the resemblance was apparently convincing enough to send several people doubling back from the pharmacy to get a better look. The mystery shopper had the fancy blouse and the mysterious vibe usually reserved for A-listers. However, the illusion reportedly shattered as soon as she spoke to a car guard while handing over some change. The accent was noticeably more Upington than Montreal.
While the real Celine Dion remains overseas, Somerset West residents are being reminded to always check the spelling on a loyalty card before tagging a stranger on social media.
