Facebook Group Solves Problem — Immediately Creates New One
A local Facebook group dedicated to Helderberg community issues this week achieved what members described as “a genuine breakthrough” by resolving a long-standing disagreement about street lighting in a residential area, reaching a consensus position after eleven days of discussion and producing an outcome that a councillor confirmed would be acted upon.
The resolution was celebrated for approximately four minutes before a new and equally heated discussion began about who deserved credit for resolving the first one, whether the resolution was actually correct or merely agreed-upon, whether the person who first raised the issue in 2019 had ever been properly acknowledged and whether the group’s administrator had played a neutral role throughout or had, as three members now suspected, a personal interest in the lighting situation that had influenced the moderation.
The new argument has attracted more participants than the original. Three people who had not engaged with the lighting discussion at all have joined specifically for the credit dispute, which they appear to find more interesting. A member who was part of the original resolution has posted a clarifying statement. The clarifying statement has been interpreted in five different ways, none of which align with what she intended.
The administrator has issued a reminder about community guidelines. The reminder has attracted twelve comments. The street light is being installed next Thursday. No one has mentioned this since the argument began.
