Local Weather Changes Four Times in Single Afternoon — Residents Still Somehow Unprepared

The weather over the Helderberg area on Saturday changed meaningfully on four separate occasions between 12h00 and 17h30, cycling through conditions that included warm and clear, cold and overcast, a brief and purposeful rain that lasted eleven minutes and then a return to something almost warm but with a wind that made the temperature academic and in doing so managed to catch essentially every resident in the area in a configuration of clothing, plans and outdoor furniture that was calibrated for the previous condition rather than the current one.

This is not an unusual occurrence. The Helderberg is known for this. The mountain, the sea, the pass and the south-easter combine to produce a microclimate capable of more variation in a single afternoon than some regions achieve in a week and this is understood, broadly, by everyone who lives here. Understanding it does not appear to produce readiness.

At noon, with the sky clear and the temperature genuinely pleasant, two separate families put washing on the line. One of them brought the washing in before the 14h20 overcast and was fine. The other did not and had views about this at dinner. A man who had set up a chair in his garden to read was inside by 14h35, outside again by 15h10, inside definitively by 15h50 when the rain began and outside one final time at 17h15 when the sun came back, at which point he read four pages before the wind made the pages difficult to manage and he went inside for the last time and described the afternoon as “a lot of admin for not much reading.”

A woman who had arranged an outdoor birthday lunch adjusted the venue twice, once to inside and once back outside and ultimately fed her guests on the boundary between the two spaces in a configuration that offered protection from most weather events but commitment to none, which is, given the afternoon’s conduct, probably the optimal strategy and also something the Helderberg has been suggesting residents learn for years.

The forecast for Saturday had said partly cloudy with a chance of showers. This was accurate. It was also, as local residents understand, somewhat beside the point. Partly cloudy with a chance of showers is the forecast’s way of saying: bring everything and commit to nothing. The residents who have lived here longest have internalised this. They were also caught out on Saturday. Some things you know and also somehow never quite know enough.
