Residents across the Helderberg were left stunned this week after a Gordon’s Bay man was arrested for allegedly bottling seawater and marketing it as a premium nutritional health drink packed with “essential ocean minerals.”
The product sold under the name Marine Life Balance Hydration Solution reportedly retailed for R89 per bottle at various markets between Somerset West and Stellenbosch where wellness enthusiasts eagerly purchased the mysterious blue liquid.
According to promotional material the drink offered “natural sodium restoration holistic mineral alignment and authentic coastal energy.”
Investigators however became suspicious after multiple customers complained the beverage tasted “exactly like the ocean.”
One Strand resident admitted she initially believed the gritty texture indicated “artisanal authenticity.”
“He told me the sand was optional extra fibre and grounding minerals” she explained while rinsing her mouth repeatedly.
Authorities say the accused allegedly collected water directly from the Gordon’s Bay shoreline using camping containers and what witnesses described as “extreme confidence.”
Further concerns emerged after labels claimed the product was “locally sourced from spiritually active tidal zones.”
Meanwhile several Somerset West wellness influencers continue defending the drink online insisting modern society is “too disconnected from marine nutrition.”
A Stellenbosch yoga instructor reportedly described the arrest as “an attack on alternative hydration journeys.”
Scientists quickly dismissed claims regarding health benefits noting the beverage contained roughly the same salt concentration as “accidentally swallowing seawater while body surfing.”
Gordon’s Bay locals reacted with less surprise.
“To be fair” admitted one harbour fisherman “we were wondering why this oke kept filling bottles next to the slipway.”
Municipal health officials confirmed additional charges may follow after discovering a premium version marketed as Extra Mineral Reserve Edition allegedly contained “noticeably more sand.”
At publication time several customers were still requesting refunds while others insisted the product “really helped with mindfulness near the beach.”
