Cyclist Completes Gordon’s Bay Mountain Pass in Record Time

Cyclist completes Gordon’s Bay Mountain pass in record time — car behind him for 11km has different view of what constitutes a record

Gordon’s Bay — Satire

Deon, 44, a software consultant from Somerset West, completed what he has described in three separate WhatsApp messages, one Instagram caption and a conversation at his office on Monday morning as a personal best on the Gordon’s Bay mountain pass climb on Saturday, finishing the ascent in a time he is very proud of and intends to submit to a Strava segment he created himself in 2021 and which currently has four participants, one of whom is his brother-in-law.

Johan, who was driving a Toyota Fortuner behind Deon for the full 11 kilometres of the ascent and who left his driveway at 7h15 for what he had expected to be a routine drive to Grabouw to collect a gate motor, has a different view of what the morning represented and is not, his wife confirmed, in a position to comment at this stage as the matter is with his therapist.

Johan had, by his own account, attempted the overtaking manoeuvre at four separate points where the road briefly widened, only to find Deon accelerating into each gap with what Johan described as “an almost supernatural awareness” of the road ahead. Deon, for his part, said he had not noticed the Fortuner until he reached the top, at which point he removed his helmet, took a photograph of the view and posted it with the caption “earned.”

The pass, which has a speed limit and is used by commuters, residents, school transport and delivery vehicles, has not been designated a cycling route. Deon said he rides it every second weekend and finds the drivers generally very supportive.

Johan’s gate motor remains uncollected.
