“All the news fit to mumble under one’s breath”
A Strand resident convened an urgent neighbourhood meeting this week after reportedly “discovering” a traffic light at a well-known intersection that municipal records confirm has been fully operational since 2009 and which Google Maps has been routing people through without incident for the better part of fifteen years.
“I drive through there every single day,” the resident, who asked to be identified only as Deon, told this publication. “That was not there before. I would have noticed. I notice things.”
The meeting was attended by eleven neighbours, a further three who joined by speakerphone and a child who came for the biscuits and stayed longer than most of the adults. Of those present, three agreed the light looked “new-ish” and offered supporting testimony about it seeming brighter than they remembered. Four recalled it being there for many years and were thanked for their input and then largely ignored. One resident produced a photograph taken in 2017 that clearly showed the traffic light in operation, which was described by Deon as “interesting but inconclusive.”
The municipality has not responded to the meeting’s formal query, which was submitted via email by someone whose email address turned out to be incorrect. Each attendee has interpreted this silence differently and all interpretations are unflattering.
Deon has since driven through the intersection six times to “keep an eye on it” and maintains it is “behaving suspiciously.”
