Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay Become ‘The Same Place’

Helderberg Basin residents’ debate whether Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay are ‘the same place’ — consensus elusive, feelings very real

A Facebook post published on Tuesday evening in the Helderberg Community Noticeboard group, asking the question “which town in the Helderberg has the best beach?” and described by its author as a bit of fun, generated 340 comments over eighteen hours, four unfriending events, one resignation by the community manager who said she had not signed up for this when she volunteered in 2019 and a deeply sincere and surprisingly well-argued response from a man in Belgium who visited in 1998 and still thinks about it.

The debate, which began as a straightforward preference poll, arrived within eleven comments at the foundational question of whether Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay are, in any meaningful sense, separate places or whether they constitute a single continuous suburb that has been parcelled into three identities for reasons of municipal administration and local pride that do not reflect lived geographic reality. This question, it emerged, is not one on which the Helderberg Basin has reached consensus and the strength of feeling it produces is disproportionate to its apparent stakes in ways that several commenters acknowledged even as they continued arguing.

Somerset West residents noted that their town has the mountain, the wine estates and the schools and that the beach is close enough. Strand residents noted that they have the actual beach and that proximity to a wine estate is not a beach. Gordon’s Bay residents did not engage extensively with the Somerset West and Strand positions, as they were conducting a parallel argument among themselves about whether the main beach or the harbour side is superior, which generated a further 87 comments and a separate unfriending.

The man in Belgium, who left a single measured comment recalling a holiday with his late wife, a fish braai and a specific quality of afternoon light over the bay that he said he had not encountered anywhere else in thirty years of travel, received 62 likes and was not involved in any of the subsequent disagreements. Several residents said his comment was the best one. He has not been back to the group since.
