Spa Introduces Package for Stress Caused Specifically by Helderberg Traffic

A day spa operating in the Helderberg area has launched what it describes as “the region’s first condition-specific automotive recovery programme,” built around the clinically identified but until now untreated stress pattern that arises from repeated exposure to the R44 during school terms, the Main Road through Strand on summer weekends and the particular psychological effect of the Gordon’s Bay turn-off when the south-easter is fully operational and there is nowhere to be except exactly where you are.

“We commissioned a very informal survey,” the spa manager explained. “We sent it to about forty clients and asked them to list their three primary sources of daily stress. Every single respondent mentioned traffic. Not some of them. All of them. Several mentioned specific roads by name. One mentioned a specific corner of a specific road at a specific time of day with a level of detail that suggested she had been waiting for someone to ask.”

The package, priced at R1,850 for a half-day programme, includes an 80-minute deep tissue massage described as targeting “the particular tension pattern associated with aggressive merging and unannounced lane changes,” a scalp treatment formulated to address wind-induced tightness for those arriving from Gordon’s Bay and a closing guided meditation that the brochure describes as “an invitation to accept road infrastructure as it is and not as it should be and to release the difference.”

There is currently a twelve-day waiting list. The spa notes, with a care that suggests someone thought about it, that it accepts no liability for traffic encountered en route to the appointment.
