Local Weather Forecast: “Confused but Dramatic”
The regional weather forecast issued for the Helderberg area on Wednesday was notable above all for its unusual and, according to those who follow such things closely, unprecedented candour.
“We are looking at conditions that can best be characterised as confused but dramatic,” the forecast read, departing from the usual confident predictions that experience has taught most residents to treat as aspirational rather than informational. “There is a strong probability of something occurring and a meaningful chance of something else occurring in a different place at a different time. Residents are advised to dress for weather, which will be present in some form. The mountain may be visible. It may also not be. Both outcomes are within the current modelling.”
Meteorologists at the responsible station confirm that this represents the most accurate forecast they have produced for the area in some time and that they are “cautiously pleased” with the move toward precision through honesty. One forecaster, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the Helderberg microclimate is “genuinely one of the more challenging environments to model” given the interaction of the mountain, the sea, the valley topography and what he described as “the wind, which has its own ideas about what’s going to happen and doesn’t share them in advance.”
